FOOD SHOPPING: Going to the food store? If so, ask your little one to count what you need: 4 apples, 1 loaf of bread, 3 bottles of water. Not only will this build his math skills, but also his confidence as he applies mathematical concepts to the real world. And, we know that young children LOVE to help.

COOKING & SETTING THE TABLE: Your child can "help" you prepare food in simple ways, like counting out loud the ingredients you put in a dish. Talk to your child as you prepare food: "I'm putting in 1 pinch of salt; 2 handfuls of pasta,” etc. They also can "help" you set the table. "How many people will eat dinner? Let's count together…So how many spoons do we need? We need the same number of spoons as people, right?" This discussion even moves into a simple comparison between the number of people to the number of spoons.

Have fun and just talk to your children. They’ll learn a lot from listening. Any enjoy them listening to you now, because things will change in about about 10 years!
